Toolstation Western League: Bridgwater United 5-3 Ilfracombe Town

BRIDGWATER United were on the right side of a goal-fest at the weekend in the Toolstation Western League.

They defeated Ilfracombe Town 5-3 in what was a very entertaining battle as both sides created ample scoring opportunities.

It didn't take long for the goals to start either as in the second minute, Bridgwater went in front when Jay Murray scored the opener.

The hosts must have been feeling good because they doubled their lead in the seventh minute when Josiah McKayle finished a well worked team move.

He scored a second of the afternoon on 30 minutes to put Bridgwater United 3-0 up in front of a now very happy and loud home crowd.

That was the score at half time as Bridgwater were well on top and Ilfracombe looked rocked.

And in the second half the Robins were able to push further in front when Jack Taylor scored yet another goal for the club in the 57th minute.

However the visitors were not going to lie down easily and in the 73rd minute they began a very impressive fight back.

It was 41 in the 73rd minute, but by the 80th minute it was 4-3 as Ilfracombe had clawed back three goals in just seven minutes.

The visitors were now on a high and were looking for an equaliser however Bridgwater perhaps were dealt a little bit of luck and went two goals in front once more.

In the 83rd minute, direct from a corner kick, Jake Lewellyn saw his delivery get picked up in the win and sailed over the keeper and straight in to make it 5-3.

That would be the final goal and sealed the three points for Bridgwater, who perhaps made the match more difficult than it needed to be, but nonetheless another three points on the table.

The result leaves Bridgwater United in fourth place on the league table, behind Clevedon Town in third, Falmouth Town in second and league leaders Helston Athletic.

The Robins have a game in hand on Clevedon Town however the top two have a game in hand on Bridgwater.

This makes it a tough ask for Bridgwater to push much higher than third place with just five league games remaining.

All five of those are at home fortunately, and up next, they take on Saltash United on Saturday, April 13.
