BRIDGWATER TOWN boss Craig Laird was philosophical after his side’s heavy 6-0 defeat at Southern League Division One South & West title contenders Hereford FC on Saturday.

The Robins were put to the sword by Peter Beadle’s Bulls who charged through the Robins’ defences and were led by a John Mills’ hat-trick.

Michael Symons was also at the double with Jamie Cuss also on the scoresheet as Hereford made it three wins from three games.

Meanwhile it left the Robins still searching for their first win of the campaign having also lost narrowly 1-0 at home to North Leigh on the opening weekend, before picking up a well-earned point from a 2-2 draw at Larkhall Athletic in midweek.

However the Town boss insists there are plenty of positives to take from the start of the campaign.

“We were beaten by a far better side yesterday,” admitted Laird.

“But I think you can quite often learn more about where you are as a group from defeats like that than you do when you’ve won games.

“It’ll be good for them as well as it’ll show us exactly where we are.

“But we’ve had a decent start; it’s basically a new club that’s been put together – and a load of new signings – so I think we’ve come quite a long way in a short space of time.

“We got a good point away from home at Larkhall and we should have beaten North Leigh – who are going to be there or there abouts come the end of the season.”

The Robins host Bideford in the league on Tuesday night before they welcome South West Peninsula League outfit Plymouth Parkway to Fairfax Park in their FA Cup preliminary round tie on Saturday.

On his side’s ambitions this season, Laird said: “We’re trying to get to 40 points as quickly as we can and make sure we’re safe – and then the rest can take care of itself.

“We’ve got a very young side at the moment and they’re learning all the time.

“They’ll make mistakes and we’ll lose games along the way but we’ll be a better team for it.”
