SIX wickets from Gavin Kyte saw North Newton win a nail biting encounter at Kilve by just eight runs in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League.

Kyte returned figures of 6-38 from 12 overs to ensure Kilve finished up just short of Newton’s 172-9.

Jay Darrell (57) top scored for Kilve, who appeared to be on course for victory – but Kyte’s spell sparked a middle-order collapse, to seal a narrow win for North Newton.

Earlier, B Broughton (41), J Stone (30) and C Street (27) led the way for Newton, while Carl Clemenson (4-38) and Darrell (3-32) were the pick of the Kilve attack.

In Division Seven, R Williams scored an unbeaten 74 to lead North Petherton 2nd XI to an eight-wicket thrashing of Chard A.

J Froud (4-39) took four wickets for Pethy to help restrict Chard to 153-7 from their 45 overs, before Williams and P Derbridge (30no) eased Pethy to victory.

D Pritchard (43) was the pick of the Chard batsmen and was well supported by S Dix (29) and R Young (24).

Elsewhere in the division, half-centuries from Keith Futcher (80) and S Pigden (55) fired Wembdon Wyverns to a 128-run triumph at Barrington.

The pair helped Wyverns to 258-3, with further contributions from B Stone (38) and J Prior (29no) – before S Edmonds (3-24), A Rees (2-27) and A Cook (2-16) ran through the Barrington batsmen inside 34 overs.

Three Middlezoy 2nd XI batsmen passed fifty in a 117-run win at Burnham 2nd XI.

Grant Purchase (67), A Clapp (54) and J Gray (52) all reached the milestone in Zoy’s innings of 262-8, before Purchase also starred with the ball, taking 3-14 from 12 economical overs.

E Peacock (2-19) also chipped in with a couple of wickets, as Burnham crawled in 145-7 in 45 overs.

In the top division, Bridgwater A suffered a six-wicket defeat to Temple Cloud, as a faltering batting performance cost them dear.

Bridgy could only muster 153 all out batting first, with S Standerwick (28) top scoring – and the visitors reached their target in just 26.1 overs, despite 3-51 from Scott Clapp.

Elsewhere in Division One, Middlezoy slumped to a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Winscombe, despite James Lacey’s 76.

Nathan Barnard (44) and A Campbell (34) were also in the runs for the home side, as they posted 232-6 – and Barnard then took 3-38 with the ball, to give his side a chance.

But R Shephard (97) led the Winscombe charge with a match-winning knock to edge his side home with 18 balls to spare.

J Dillow (1-47) and B Warren (1-56) bagged a wicket apiece for Zoy, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a narrow defeat.

L Darlington scored 93 for Shapwick and Polden 3rd XI to help them to a one-wicket win at Crewkerne in Division Six.

Needing 186 to win, only three Shapwick players made it into double figures – but luckily for them, P Kennard (20) and H Kennard (29) made vital contributions lower down the order, as Shapwick snuck home in the 43rd over.

Also in Division Six, Mark were 23-run winners over Huish and Langport 2nd XI, thanks to three wickets apiece from L Tinklin (3-38) and L Neilson (3-32).

The duo ensured Mark would successfully defend 170 - despite 51 not out from Huish’s C Haggett.

Earlier, Nick Ollerenshaw (44), S Tinklin (23) and T Lewis (32) top scored for Mark, with Lewis then taking (2-39) with the ball.

In Division 8N, Wembdon Academy thrashed Bridgwater Sports by 151 runs in a very one-sided affair.

Batting first, Wembdon scored 220-8, despite a middle-order collapse – E Savage (53) and L Hawkins (38no) were the pick of the batsmen, while D Ingram (4-68) starred with the ball for Sports.

But the Sports’ reply collapsed in a heap, as D Buller (3-10), E Savage (2-17), M Syvret (2-23), A Hold (2-4) and L Hawkins (1-5) each took a share of the spoils to bowl the visitors out for just 69.
