National Village Cup

Wembdon 100 lost to Goatacre 101-3 by seven wickets

WEMBDON travelled to Goatacre of Wiltshire on Sunday in the last 32 of the National Village Cup.

After persistent rain throughout the morning the skies cleared and the game started on time.

Wembdon elected to bat first on the picturesque postage stamp size of a ground.

As the ground filled up with supporters Wembdon opening batters struggled to get bat on ball and it wasn't long the aggressive approach proved costly.

Wembdon were quickly 26-3 off six overs.

Vickery (36) and Bingham (15) slowed the fall of wickets and saw off the opening bowlers taking Wembdon through to drinks at 79-4 from 20 overs.

Incredibly Wembdon crumbled after drinks losing six wickets for 21 runs in 5.2 overs - the final five batsmen fell for just nine runs between them.

Billy Vickery was the stand out performer with 36.

In reply Wembdon stood little chance but a glimmer of hope was provided by Jon Brockwell with the ball as he took three quick wickets.

Karl Trunks deserves a mention and became a crowd favourite with some superb athletic fielding on the boundary but Goatacre secured the win after 16.5 overs finishing 101- 3, G Rigali (40 no).

ON Sunday July 5 Wembdon have their annual club open day, remembering the late Dave Palmer in the Annual Chairmans XI versus President’s XI Memorial Match.

The match starts at 1pm with junior matches from 10am-midday.

All welcome whether members or not, always a great day with BBQ Bar and Bouncy Castle.
