National Knockout Cup

Bridgwater 188, beat Weston-super-Mare 77 by 111 runs

A FINE century from Mitch Windsor fired Bridgwater to a comprehensive 111-run victory over Weston-super-Mare in the first round of the National Knockout Cup on Sunday.

Windsor scored 103 as Bridgwater were bowled out for 188 batting first, before Ian Higgins (3-21) and Matt Habberfield (4-6) tore through the Weston line-up to secure an emphatic win.

Bridgwater lost Andy Hallaran and Stuart Butt early to the bowling of ex-Somerset man Charl Willoughby, however, Mitch Windsor and Barrett (18) steadied the ship, putting on 62 for the third wicket.

Windsor batted superbly, hitting several sizable sixes over the leg-side on his way to a magnificent 103, which was brought up with a towering six in the last over.

Kyran Devitt made 29 and helped the stand out performer Windsor as Bridgwater reached a competitive 188 all out in their allotted overs.

Weston’s reply never really got going, as Montgomery and Higgins picked up a wicket a piece within the first three overs.

Both Bridgwater openers bowled with excellent control, making it difficult for the Weston batters from the outset.

Higgins went on to pick up 3-20 in his nine over opening spell.

Weston lost wickets at regular intervals and were soon 38-5 after a great run out from Robbie Montgomery, before the introduction of the Habberfield brothers accounted for the remaining five Weston wickets.

Matt Habberfield’s off-spin was too good for Weston and he narrowly avoided a hat-trick on his way to a miserly 4-6 from 4.4 overs with Weston all out for 77.

Bridgwater move on to the first WEPL fixture at home to Taunton St Andrews next weekend whilst the second XI travel to Thornbury for their first competitive game.
