PGSOB 1, Bridgwater 1st XI 2

SECOND-placed Bridgwater travelled to Plymouth for a big game, playing third in the league, and a win would put them six points ahead while a loss would put the team’s level.

Bridgy slowly got into the game and managed to make attacks of their own. One of these led to the first goal with a ball in to the D by Dan Rogers found Rob Morrish who deflected the ball into the net.

Shortly after, a short corner for Bridgy found Martin James and he slotted the ball expertly into the corner of the goal.

The second half started with PGSOB piling on the pressure and finally their pressure told as they pulled a goal back.

Midway through the half, PGSOB were awarded a penalty flick but they could find no way past CSM, who made a great save.

Throughout the game and especially the final 15 minutes, CSM made save after save to keep Bridgy on top and that is how the game ended.

A very hard game for both teams who showed that they both really wanted the win and it was Bridgy who came out on top.

Man of the match was Corbett for a superb game in goal.

Yeovil and Sherborne IV 4, Bridgwater V 1

BRIDGWATER started this lower table clash with hopes of an away upset, but both teams started slowly with Yeovil creating numerous chances saved by Mark Hutter or narrowly missed.

The defence of Kev Hick, Steve Morrish, Harry Rose and Alex Howe all battled well but a break from Yeovil was always on the cards and, despite an initial save from Hutter, the ball fell loose to a Yeovil striker to score an easy tap-in.

It was Yeovil who scored their second before half-time with a broken short corner routine which evaded Hicks, Morrish and Hutter on the goal line.

Yeovil started the second-half brighter and, despite the introduction of the young Alan Baldwin, they couldn’t stop Yeovil scoring from a scuffed shot that was tapped in at the back post.

Yeovil scored a fourth on a five-on-two break but there was a glimmer of hope for Bridgwater as Dosson added a much-needed goal, set up by Hicks.

Joint men of the match were Connor Gillespie and Mark Hutter.

Bridgwater Ladies 1, Clifton III 2

BRIDGWATER opened the game at a fast pace, putting immediate pressure on the Clifton D.

But it wasn’t long before Clifton were into their stride and playing with more urgency than Bridgwater, forcing a run of short corners and resulting in their first goal.

Further Clifton attacks saw a goalmouth scramble and a foot on the line giving them a penalty stroke. GK Amy Burridge dived but, sadly, the wrong way and Clifton slotted home their second.

Bridgwater attacked with more purpose in the second half and Kath Briggs getting on the end of some strong passes from midfield.

It was persistence from Briggs that brought the deserved Bridgwater goal.

Both teams had further chances but the scoreline remained 2-1 to Clifton.

Donna Cooper won player of the match.

Bridgwater Ladies 1sts 1, Redland 3

BRIDGWATER again came out strong but again didn’t capitalise on time spent in the final quarter of the pitch.

Redland seized their opportunity from several plays down the middle of the pitch, resulting in a goal.

Redland then showed why they are top of the table with a sustained period of pressure, however, this was well soaked-up by the defence of Becca Tasker, Donna Cooper and Laura Coles.

Ten minutes into the second half, Bridgwater got their equaliser with a lovely three-pass buildup from their defence and tapped in by Abi Walker.

Late in the half, another bout of pressure from Redland gave them two more goals despite some top drawer saves by keeper Amy Burridge and an on-the-line save by Kat Male.

Player of the match votes were spread across the team with Charlie Lewis just edging it to win.

Bridgwater Ladies 2nds 1, Weston Ladies 1sts 8

BRIDGWATER were severely punished for their inability to score goals in this drubbing by undefeated Weston.

The away team, who lie second in the league, started the slower of the two teams. Bridgwater passed the ball around well and played some inspiring hockey.

However, by half-time, Bridgwater were 3-1 down having had only one shot on target which did result in a goal for Rebecca Oram.

The second half saw Bridgwater try all manner of combination of players in different positions to try and break down the Weston defence.

With their one short corner, Bridgwater managed to off load a shot but Grace Popham could only see her attempt saved.

More misery for Bridgwater followed as they saw five more goals fly into their net. They will be hoping for a more even game next weekend away to Winscombe who are one point above Bridgwater in the table.

Joint players of the match were Bridget Hedaux and Heather Tinkler
