Somerset Senior Cup

Middlezoy Rovers 2, Chilcompton Sports 1

MIDDLEZOY manager John Warren praised his side’s spirit after they made it through to the last 16 of the Somerset Senior Cup with a victory over Chilcompton Sports on Saturday.

Goals from Dan Luce and Simon Bone helped Middlezoy on their way – and the manager was pleased to see his side bounce back from a first defeat in nine last week.

He said: “It was important that we responded well after a disappointing result last weekend.

“Credit to a young Chilcompton side for trying to play the right way but we outplayed them on the day and deserved to win the game.

“I hope this is the start of another long unbeaten run for us – the next few weeks will shape our season with some big games coming up, but our target is to finish top of the division and to enjoy the cup games as a bonus.”

The opening exchanges saw both sides keeping possession well but neither was able to create a chance of note, until Dan Luce opened the scoring on 20 minutes with a neat finish from a Damon Jennings through ball.

Luce had the chance to double the lead on the half-hour mark after good work from full-back Charlie Lintell but missed the target when well placed to score.

After the break, and with Middlezoy in control, Simon Bone headed home an Aaron Whaites corner to double the advantage.

This goal shook the away side back into life and, on the hour mark, they pulled a goal back with a neat finish past Baker in the Zoy goal.

The visitors struggled for the remainder to create a significant threat, mainly thanks to the Middlezoy back-line which was well marshalled by Scott Turner at the heart.

Craig Wright thought he had scored a third late on but his swerving long-range effort deviated on to the post and bounced out.
