THE £2.9million works on the Huntworth Roundabout in Bridgwater are complete after months of traffic chaos.

The changes and improvements began back in October 2015 and aimed to increase traffic capacity and ease future congestion on the Taunton Road and M5 access.

Somerset County Council had previously stated that the work should be completed before the end of May this year.

Bridgwater town and Somerset County councillor Leigh Redman said: "All traffic management has now been removed from the roundabout with the exception of a nearside lane closure on the approach to the roundabout from J24 and a very short section of lane closure on the circulatory area of the roundabout itself.

"Both of these section of traffic management are required for safety reasons as we only have a one lane exit from the roundabout back towards North Petherton until we have completed the widening of the A38 back towards North Petherton.

"Over the next couple of days traffic signals engineers will be on site monitoring and adjusting the traffic signals."

Cllr David Fothergill, cabinet member for Highways at Somerset County Council, said: “We’re pleased to say that the major work to upgrade Huntworth roundabout is now complete.

"I’d like to thank Skanska for all their hard work to ensure the new and improved roundabout is up and running in time for the summer holidays.
"While most of our traffic management measures have now been removed, our Highways team is now tasked with completing the final touches to the roundabout, although these shouldn’t have a big impact on motorists.

"For safety reasons, we will also be keeping the lane closure on the approach from Junction 24 in place, until work to provide the two lanes on the exit from the roundabout towards North Petherton is complete."
