I like America. I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few different parts over the years and have many friends over there. Americans on the whole are a fairly friendly bunch. However, what I do object to is the amount of Americanisms that are creeping into the English language. You know the sort of thing I mean, saying “zee” as the last letter of the alphabet. It’s not! Just ask that rapping bloke Jay-Zedd. Others that annoy me include the phrases “24/7”, take out instead of takeaway, stepping up to the plate which is a baseball reference and sidewalk instead of pavement. I’m sure you can think of some of your own. The one that irritates me the most is saying math, instead of maths. There’s more than one so it must be plural! Rant over.

On June 23rd we face one of the most important decisions of my adult life when we vote to either stay in or leave the European Union. I’ve had a number of people ask if we will be doing anything at the station on the pros and cons of each side as there as I know may people who are completely undecided on which way to vote. The good news is that we are in the process of putting together a special programme which will hopefully help you understand the issues and make what is a vitally important decision. Details will be announced on air and on our website too.

Finally, the answer to last week’s teaser: How did Susan Wallace of Bridgwater make history? The answer? After the voting age was lowered in January 1970, Susan Wallace became the first 18-year-old to vote in the UK, during the by-election that elected Tom King. This week’s teaser: When was Dunball wharf built? No cheating, I’ll give you the answer in next week’s column. Have a great week.
