Wills Road in Bridgwater could become a little safer this year if traffic calming is put in place. Residents contacted the Mercury last year over a catalogue of car crashes along the street that connects Hamp with the Taunton Road.

Now their prayers may be answered after Somerset County Cllr Leigh Redman took up their case and has lobbied Highways was improvements to slow traffic.

He said: “I have been working with officers from County Highways to try and find a way to affect traffic calming along Wills road. The officers carried out speed monitoring, examined photos, listened to stories and police reports. They then looked at cost effective options, the options need to be cost effective or they may be put back on the shelf.

“The officers are now ready to consult on the plans, I have worked with Bridgwater town council and SDC to try and find a funding package that can get this work done ASAP, the next stage is consultation.”

The plans are available on the County website and Cllr Redman plans on holding public consultations at the ReCreation Centre on Rhode Lane February 22-23, from 5.30 to 7pm.

Cllr Redman said: “The proposals will hopefully be done at the same time as the new Link from Stockmoor, the works will add a number of centre islands to slow drivers and prevent drifting, and there will be extensive re-lining. This really is a great opportunity to make the road safer.”

Although the plans have been welcomed by most residents some people have taken to social media to say the plans are a waste of money or they won't stop drunk drivers. One reoccurring issue for residents it the problem of turning right onto Taunton Road from Wills Road during the rush hour when long queues build up.
