A HOUSING developer has submitted fresh plans for affordable homes in Puriton, after withdrawing a previous controversial scheme.

Taylor Wimpey UK wants to build 49 homes on land to the north of Riverton Road, Puriton, and consultation is now underway.

The firm previously wanted to build 59 homes off Riverton Road, but that application was withdrawn in October 2013 following concerns from residents that a new housing development would increase existing traffic problems.

Bruce Poole, Puriton Parish Council clerk, said: “We will be discussing the fresh application at our planning meeting on August 12, but I’d be very surprised if the community takes a different view to this application.

“Although there are plans for a new road from the Puriton Energy Park, which could alleviate traffic from this housing development, we must look at the application and situation as it currently stands.”

In a planning statement, Barton Willmore said on behalf of the applicant: “The reports conclude the proposed development will not have any significant adverse effect on the application site or the surrounding area.”

The developer has also pointed out in its new application that the Puriton Parish Plan states limited growth would be acceptable if aimed at providing for a specialist housing need, e.g. affordable or sheltered housing.

The plan says if a major development were to go ahead, the developer could make contributions such as high speed broadband, improved play facilities, improvements to the village appearance or sports facilities.

The new scheme includes 15 affordable homes made up of six one-bedroom apartments, seven two-bedroom homes and two three-bedroom homes. Affordable housing will make up 40% of the development, including low cost housing.
