FAMILIES and nature enthusiasts can enjoy a packed season of events at Shapwick Heath nature reserve in Sedgemoor.

Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve (NNR) offers over 500 hectares to spot wildlife at the heart of the Somerset Levels and Moors.

The wetland reserve, managed by Natural England, is hosting a Wild Day Out in Springtime on Sunday (April 27) from 10am to 3.30pm.

People can explore the reserve on an open-topped trailer ride, go on foot along peaceful nature trails, and learn more about wildlife by doing puzzles, art and crafts on site in the Avalon Marshes Centre.

Simon Clark, senior reserve manager for Shapwick NNR, said: “The recent floods badly affected parts of the Levels.

“Fortunately we remained largely unaffected and we’re looking forward to welcoming people back to the reserve and into the local area.”

Future events between April and September 2014 include: a birds of prey day; how to identify dragonflies; 24 hours of walks and talks across the Avalon Marshes; and days out learning about the argent and sable moth, glow worms, bats and bees.
